On January 20, 2009, Forgotten People and three (self-governing) Chapters on the western portion of the Navajo Nation filed suit in Administrative Court to oppose the US Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining’s approval of a life-of-mine permit for Peabody Coal Company’s Black Mesa mine. Forgotten People believes the lawsuit will protect the human, cultural, and ecological health within their traditional territories, curb global warming, and uphold Navajo Fundamental law and the common law principle of hazho’ogo because the mining permit was approved without notice to, or participation by, individuals to be affected by it.
On the Navajo Nation, Forgotten People is working with Hada’asidi to honor our sacred obligation to protect the environment and our native home lands by developing an alternative energy policy for the Navajo Nation and stop the Navajo Nation Council from renewing Peabody Coal Company’s Kayenta mine lease.
